Pet of the week – Hozier

It has now been nine months since Hozier first arrived at the Humane Society of Kawartha Lakes, and about six months since we last shared an update on him on the radio.

Hozier came into HSKL in July 2025 as a stray dog in very rough shape. He was extremely thin, very anxious, and clearly had not had the care or stability every animal deserves. Since arriving, Hozier has received full veterinary care. He has been neutered, vaccinated, microchipped, and dewormed. He has also been supported with medication to help manage his anxiety. From October to now, Hozier has been in a foster home where his true personality has really started to shine.

In the car, he travels well and will happily sit or lie down in the back. At home, he is calm, respectful, and not destructive, and he does best with a steady routine.

Hozier is very food motivated and eats quickly, so his food must be fed to him in a slow feeder. All food needs to be kept secure, as counters, garbage, and recycling are all very tempting for him. He enjoys dried liver treats, lick mats, and even kibble as a reward, which makes training very effective. He takes his daily medication easily in a pill pocket or with food.

With people, Hozier is friendly and social. He has done well with all ages and is currently living with an eight-year-old child. He generally enjoys meeting new people.

On walks, he is a good leash walker and responds well to direction. At home, he is house trained and enjoys toys, especially balls and chew toys, although stuffed toys don’t tend to last long.

What stands out most about Hozier is that he thrives on routine. When life is predictable, he is at his very best.

He has come a long way from the anxious stray he once was and continues to grow everyday thanks to the care of his foster home.
